-12C when I cycled to work this morning. Compacted snow, ice, Dog knows what.
My gloves are bloody useless, I'll be wearing both pairs tomorrow[1], I need two
fleeces, and something over my jeans. Strangely, headband over ears is sufficient.

However, no problems with hydraulic brakes, Alfine hub gear works fine, so no
problems with icing at all. 'Part from the rider that is...

[1] Heine Gerkin were out of bar muffs when I tried to buy some, and the next
motorcycle dealer is now to bloody far away to cycle in this weather :(

Take off the jeans and put a headband on each leg, it'll do you more
good. Cotton will draw heat from your body if it is the slightest bit
damp. Wear wool or synthetics and carry spare clothing which will act
as a vapour barrier (or bin bags).

This winter I've invested in some silk inner gloves. For something so
thin they make a remarkable difference. And for twelve quid they damn
well should. It's not gone below -4C here, but I find the headband
(from C+ cover) gets discarded once I've warmed up. My ears have a
    large radiating area too....

Try something under your jeans - denim is pretty useless (if it gets
wet it's worse than useless) as a base layer.

Get up in winter is Castelli Thermodress bibtights with bibshorts on
    top.
    Long sleeved jersey
    Castelli radiation foil lined jacket
Thin hi vis windproof jacket over the top.
    Neoprene overshoes
Deputy Dawg hat with underchin drawstring.
    Gloves

Minus 8 so far - only tips of the fingers get really cold.

Had trouble with the Alfine today - the hub didn't freeze, but the cable
boot froze onto the cable, stopping the puller from releasing to the low
    gears... now sufficiently lubed.
